Larry Shor was born in Washington, DC in 1956, and grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland. He is a graduate of Northwood High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Maryland. He attended the Shomrai Emunah Talmud Torah, and was a student of Rabbi Gedaliah Anemer, ZT’L. He served as a professional choir singer for over 25 years at Beth Sholom and Beth Tfiloh Congregations, before becoming a Hazzan in his own right. He leads services in many shuls in the area, and has been for ten years, the High Holiday Hazzan for the Ezras Israel Congregation. Involved in the kosher food business for many years, he was a proprietor of his own kosher stores and also served as a kosher food supervisor for the Rabbinical Council of Washington, the Star K of Baltimore and the Orthodox Union. Since 1980, he has hosted a Jewish music radio program called “Washington Jewish Radio” and writes a column called “Larry Shor’s Greater Washington” for the Kol Habirah newspaper.
In 2014 he joined Sagel Bloomfield Funeral Care, where he serves in several capacities. He is the Director of Monuments, working with families to create beautiful and appropriate bronze and granite monuments. He also operates the Shiva Concierge Service. Drawing upon his many years of experience in leading services, he officiates regularly at funerals, where his unique skills and compassionate manner bring great comfort to bereaved families.
Larry lives in Rockville with his wife Shari, also a native Washingtonian. They are the proud parents of Benjamin, Matthew and Shayna.
